Description

When their Jewish heritage and progressive philosophies made the Bondy family a target of the Nazi regime, they were forced to sell their school and start anew in America. Max and Gertrud Bondy first opened their innovative school in Windsor, Vermont, and moved the campus to Lenox, Massachusetts, in 1944. Windsor Mountain School was ahead of its time--the faculty honored diversity, and it became the first co-ed integrated boarding school in Berkshire County. Families like the Belafontes, Poitiers and Campanellas were attracted to the school for its multicultural and international curriculum. From its golden age to the rock-and-roll era, Windsor Mountain strived to stay true to its mission until hard financial times forced the school to close in 1975. Roselle Kline Chartock captures the spirit of this Berkshire boarding school that still lives on in the hearts of its alumni.

This terrific book came to me from a WMS alum who is thanked in the credits. His thoughtful gift was passed on as I shared this beautifully written book about a school that saved my life, with my Dad and my sister, who is also an alum. (We were the Perkins twins, my name has since changed). It is quite a challenge to do justice in exposition of the history and philosophy of an institution as well loved and as quirky and brilliant and formative as Windsor Mountain School. It is also a major challenge to do justice to its amazing founders. That Rosalie Chartock so well captures Windsor's essential nature is just phenomenal. That her writing is so good and her scholarship excellent, is a bonus. This school means so much to so many, I never though such a sound work of history and appreciation was doable. Well here it is, and thank you Rosalie. And moreover, thank you Heinz in heaven, for believing in me. Thank you WMS staff for your skills in inspiring life long learning as a lasting love and good character as a way of adapting but not conforming, for me and generations before and after me. It makes me very happy that Caroline and the kids are in this world to carry on, but the Bondys had many many children.
